Cast brass candlestick in the shape of an embossed leaf, possibly a maple leaf or ivy leaf with a twisted vine handle.
This portable candlestick is also known as a nightlight candlestick, finger candlestick or chamberstick. Sourced in Belgium, where this candlestick is known as a bougeoir palmatoire, this piece is likely a 19th century original and is wonderfully made. In the second half of the 19th century French and Belgian foundries strongly favoured naturalistic organic themes and grape leaves, ivy etc were popular cultural symbols of abundance home hospitality and harvest.
A lovely weighty item which is super tactile and just right as a useful accessory for cosy winter nights. It is possible to unscrew the candle cup for easier cleaning.
